University of Maryland School of Medicine

Each year student advocates from the University of Maryland are encouraged to have a Legislative Day in Annapolis to let legislators know the issues and concerns they have about various programs.

The 21st was the day for the School of Medicine to visit Annapolis.  The School of Medicine is the 5th oldest and first public medical school in the US and the first medical school in the country to construct its own hospital for clinical instruction.  Students are encouraged to be actively involved in community programs such as HIV clinics, homeless and domestic abuse shelters, nursing homes and local schools.

Since I am greatly concerned about the need to attract more medical professionals to the Southern Maryland area, I asked them if any of them were planning to practice in Charles County.  I then spent some time explaining how Charles County enjoyed a great quality of life and was a wonderful place to raise a family.  I am not sure that I converted any of the students to move here, but I will keep trying.  Adequate health care of top quality is needed for our county to thrive.
